Butter Cake Recipe

A butter cake is a cake in which one of the main ingredients is butter.

Butter cakes use the most basic of ingredients butter, sugar, eggs, flour, and a leavening agent (baking powder or baking soda) and transform them into a cake.
These cakes are considered one of the quintessential cakes in American baking & find their origins in the English pound cake, which traditionally used equal parts of butter, flour, sugar, and eggs to produce a heavy, rich cake.

With the introduction of baking powder these heavy cakes have been transformed to the modern day light butter cakes we are familiar with.

Butter Cake Recipe

Recipe Ingredients

  2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

  250grams Butter softened
  4 Eggs

  1 3/4 cups Castor Sugar
  2 Teaspoons Vanilla Essence
  2 Teaspoons Baking powder
  1/2 Teaspoon Baking soda

  1/2 Teaspoon salt
  2/3 Cup Whole milk
  1/2 Cup butter milk
   

Recipe Directions

    1.Preheat oven to 355 F or 180 C. Grease and line two 8" cake pans with baking paper.
    2.Sieve all purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda,salt in a bowl. Set aside.
    3.Now in a medium bowl beat the sugar  and butter till light and fluffy.
    4. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating to combine. Add the buttermilk and beat for 10 seconds.
    5. Now add the flour, a few tablespoons at a time. Use a wooden spoon to combine. Next add a little milk and stir to combine. Repeat with remaining flour and milk.
    6.Pour the cake mixture into the greased pans & Bake for 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    7.Allow to cool in pan for 10 minutes and remove from pan to cool completely.

    8.Slice the Butter Cake and serve.
